HMI-focused ARM9 SBC features 7-inch touchscreen

Premier Farnell has introduced a Linux-ready SBC with a 7-inch touchscreen and Atmel ARM9-based CPU module, aimed at HMI applications including home automation.

With its integrated Embedded Display Module (EDM), the EDM6070AR-01 single board computer supports a variety of embedded HMI (human machine interface) applications, including industrial control terminals, intelligent instruments, medical products, network terminals, and data acquisition and analysis, says U.K.-based Premier Farnell. A “Smart Home” demo application is included, featuring a “smart-LED” controller. The home automation application lets users set independent light levels in each room, and features a “smart-climate” controller for flexible temperature and humidity controls, says the company. It also enables room-specific audio streaming and management of surveillance cameras.

Mini6935 COM

Driving the EDM6070AR-01 single-board computer (SBC) is a separately available Mini6935 computer-on-module (COM) built around Atmel’s ARM9-based AT91SAM9X35 processor, which offers 16KB each of data and instruction cache. The up to 400MHz SAM9X35 is more advanced than the SAM9G35, offering additional CAN, ISI, and UART interfaces. It lacks the second Ethernet controller of the more closely related SAM9X25, but adds a second CAN interface and an LCD interface. While the announcement specifies the SAM9X35, the product page mentions only an Atmel ARM926EJ-S processor, suggesting that one may be able to swap in other Atmel SAM9 processors.

The 64 × 45mm Mini6935 COM is equipped with 128MB DDR2 SDRAM and 256MB NAND flash, as well as 4MB of data flash. A 10/100 Ethernet MAC is provided, and all signals are transmitted via two rows of connectors on the back of the module.

I/O includes the 800 x 600-pixel LCD controller, a USB device port and two USB host ports, and dual SD card interfaces. There are also industrial I/Os, such as dual CAN and SPI interfaces and 108 GPIOs. The 3.3V-powered module can withstand temperatures of -10 to 70℃, says Premier Farnell. The module, as well as the full EDM6070AR-01 SBC, ships with a Linux 2.6.39 BSP with support for Qt GUIs and numerous file systems.

EDM6070AR-01 SBC and touchscreen display

The EDM6070AR-01 SBC extends the Mini6935 with a 12V power supply, a touchscreen, and various real-world ports. Coastline ports include a 10/100Mbps Ethernet port, audio I/O, and USB host and device ports. Around the corner are edge connectors for debug, RS485 and RS485 interfaces, and a CAN interface.

The EDM6070AR-01 further integrates three GPIO inputs and four outputs, as well as various buzzers, buttons, and LEDs. The 7-inch, 800 x 480-pixel touchscreen appears to stack on top of the board.
