DMP announced a Linux-ready “Ebox-3100″ mini-PC, running on an x86-based, 400MHz Vortex86EX processor and offering 2.3 Watt consumption and a $95 price.

DM&P Group’s DMP Electronics division is offering the Ebox-3100 as a higher-end, more industrial focused complement to its similarly configured and enclosed 86Duino Educake mini-PC announced in November for $49. That device also shares similar circuitry to DMP’s 86Duino One boardset announced at the same time, which adds Arduino-like I/O expansion.

The Ebox-3100, which sells for $86 to $95 depending on quantity, has the same new x86-compatible DMP Vortex86EX processor as these devices, but it’s clocked to 400MHz, up from 300MHz. It also offers 512MB of DDR3 RAM instead of 128MB to 256MB. Compared to the earlier Vortex86SX, the Vortex86EX adds an L2 cache (4-way 128KB) and moves up to DDR3 memory support, among other enhancements.

The Ebox-3100 is one of a long line of low-cost Ebox mini-PCs, sold by DMP under its Icop brand, all featuring DMP’s low-power Vortex processors. In this case, the Ebox-3100 is said to run at under 2.3 Watts. The mini-PC is designed for automation, control systems, and industrial applications, says DMP.

Interfaces are similar to those of the Educake. You get a pair of USB 2.0 ports, a Fast Ethernet port, an SD slot, an RS-232 port, and audio I/O. There’s no video port on the fanless, 78 x 78 x 28mm device, which operates at 0 to 50°C. Special features include an “auto power on” function.

Specifications listed for the Ebox-3100 include:

  • Processor — DMP Vortex86EX (1x 32-bit x86 core @ 400MHz)
  • Memory — 512MB DDR3 RAM; SD/SDHC slot
  • Networking — 10/100Mbps Ethernet port with PXE boot
  • Other I/O:
    • 2x USB 2.0 ports
    • Audio mic-in, line-out jacks
    • RS-232 COM port (9-pin)
  • Operating temperature — 0 to 50°C
  • Power — DC +5V @ 0.45A; less than 2.3W consumption
  • Weight — 208 g
  • Dimensions — 78 x 78 x 28mm

I have used the eBox3350MX 24/7 for a few years as an mpd server (music) and it works great. It is a few $s more for a more for a 1GHz processor & 512MB. See http://www.wdlsystems.com/Box-PC/Light-Industrial/eBox-3350MX-with-Power-Adapter.html
