Fanless, Kaby Lake industrial PC has IEC 61850-3 power protection

Dec 7, 2018 — by Eric Brown — 248 views

Lanner’s fanless, Ubuntu-ready “LEC-3340” is a 3U rackmount edge server with 7th Gen Core and Xeon E3 CPUs aimed at power subsystems. It features IEC 61850-3 compliance, -40 to 70°C support, isolated serial interfaces, and ESD protection.

In the new age of edge and fog computing, the line between embedded and server technology is growing ever fuzzier. Bridging the gap at the high end of our coverage purview is Lanner’s new LEC-3340 Consolidation Server, which despite the 3U rackmount form-factor and the high end Kaby Lake-H or Xeon-E3 foundation, is designed to run without a fan.

The Ubuntu (Linux 2.6) and Windows 10 Embedded supported system is optimized for use in power substations, offering IEC 61850-3 and IEEE 1613 compliance for power protected equipment. The system also supports other industrial computer vision, motion control, SCADA, and AI applications that require power protection.

The 438 x 300.1 x 131.8mm monster is made of corrugated aluminum and steel and supports -40 to 70°C temperatures. It’s equipped with isolated serial and digital I/O and features optional dual 16.6-160VDC power supplies for redundancy. An AC 100~240 supply is also optional.

The system offers a choice of Intel 7th Gen “Kaby Lake” processors running at 2.2GHz or 2.9GHz that are said to be capable of running multiple VMs (Virtual Machines). These include the dual-core Core i3-7100E with HD Graphics P530 and 35W TDP and the quad-core, Core i5-7442EQ and Xeon E3-1505L V6, both with HD Graphics P630 and 25W TDPs. An Intel CM238 chipset is also onboard.

The LEC-3340 supports up to 64GB DDR4 ECC RAM via dual slots. Storage features include an mSATA socket and 2x swappable 2.5-inch SATA bays with RAID 0/1 support.

The LEC-3340 is equipped with 4x Intel I210IT Gigabit Ethernet, 5x USB 3.0, and single DP and DVI-D ports. You also get 4x externally accessible PCIe slots: a single PCIe x16 and 3x PCie x4 slots.

Dual isolated RS-232/422/485 COM ports are available along with an isolated TTL RS-232 port. The latter offers IRIG-B time code support for synchronizing breakers, relays, switches and other components in power generation environments.

The system provides 2KV digital isolation, 15KV ESD protection, a watchdog, and a relay port for a power failure alarm. There are 10x LEDs that cover power, storage, networking, serial, and user options. TPM 2.0 is optional.
