D-Link enters IoT space with a smart AC socket

D-Link has launched itself into IoT space, with a $50 Linux-based smart AC power socket for IP-based monitoring and control of lights and other appliances.

We all know D-Link as a maker of routers, NAS devices, surveillance cameras, and media players, but the “DSP-W215 Wi-Fi Smart Plug” marks a new milestone for the company: its entry into the brave new world of the “Internet of Things” (IoT).

To use begin using this little WiFi-controlled “Smart Plug” gizmo, you insert it into a conventional AC wall socket, and plug the power cord of a lamp, hair dryer, fan, or other small appliance into it. Next you, download the free “mydlink” app for Android or iOS (requires Android 4.0+ or iOS 6+) to your mobile device and perform a quick setup process.

D-Link says the Smart Plug is easy to set up initially, thanks to its WPS (WiFi Protected Setup) function. You simply press the WPS button (shown above) and use the D-Link mydlink app to complete the set-up process. Once the device is successfully linked to your WiFi network and initialized, you’re ready to configure and control it using your mobile device.

With the mydlink app, you’ll be able to monitor the status of the plugged-in device and turn it on or off from anywhere with Internet access. You can also create on/off schedules for automatic control of the plugged-in device, configure various push alerts, and view graphs of energy use over time. And in the (hopefully unlikely) event that the Smart Plug overheats, the device’s embedded Linux brain will detect that condition via an on-board thermal sensor, and will immediately shut off power to the plugged-in device. Powerwise, the SmartPlug can supply up to 1800 Watts to a plugged-in device, and it consumes about 0.8 Watts when it’s idle and less than 5 Watts when it’s thinking hard.

A few additional specs listed by D-Link on the DSP-W215′s datasheet include:

  • WiFi — 802.11n; supports WPS (WiFi Protected Setup)
  • LEDs — power, status
  • Dimensions — 90 x 61 x 36mm (3.6 x 2.4 x 1.4 inches)
  • Voltage input — 100-125VAC
  • Maximum power to plugged in device — 1800W
  • Power consumption — approx. 0.8W idle; 5W max. (not including power supplied to plugged-in device)

D-Link confirmed that the DSP-W215 runs embedded Linux, but declined to supply any details regarding its embedded processor or memory resources.

The DSP-W215 mydlink Wi-Fi Smart Plug appears to be available for immediate shipment from D-Link’s online store, priced at about $50 (plus shipping, if less than 2 units are ordered). Further details are available at the company’s DSP-W215 page.
