Compact module packs 2GHz quad-core G-Series SoC

Mar 19, 2014 — by Eric Brown — 872 views

Aaeon announced a 95 x 95mm COM Express Type 6 module based on AMD’s G-Series SoC, featuring GbE, dual display support, 10 USB ports, and five PCIe lanes.

Like Aaeon’s recent EMB-KB1 Mini-ITX motherboard, the company’s new “COM-KB” computer-on-module builds upon AMD’s Embedded G-Series SoC. Other COM Express Type 6 modules equipped with the G-Series SoC include the Congatec Conga-TCG and MSC’s C6C-GX. Like these COMs, Aaeon’s Linux-friendly COM-KB uses the 95 x 95mm “Compact” version of the COM Express Type 6 form factor.

The COM-KB ships with either the quad-core, 2GHz GX-420CA or the dual-core, 1.65GHz GX-217GA G-Series SoCs. No OS support has been announced for the “coming soon” COM-KB, which has yet to receive a full datasheet, but Aaeon’s EMB-K1 supports Linux, and we’re confident the same is true here. The module is aimed at automation, medical, ticketing, transportation, gaming, kiosk, and POS/POI applications, says Aaeon.

The COM-KB can be loaded with up to 16GB DDR3-1600 RAM, and offers a gigabit Ethernet controller. Dual display support is provided, with 24-bit LVDS and a choice of CRT, eDP, or HDMI interfaces. You get two USB 3.0 and eight USB 2.0 interfaces, as well as SD support and dual 6Gbps SATA connections. HD audio and GPIO interfaces are also available.
