Cloud infrastructure helps telcos leverage COTS hardware

Feb 26, 2013 — by Rick Lehrbaum — 196 views

MontaVista has announced a new real-time platform for telecom equipment manufacturers (TEMS). The Real-time Telco Cloud Infrastructure (RTCI) lets TEMS use standard server form-factors to build controller and gateway equipment for use by mobile and fixed access network operators.

Previously, telcos were unable to employ cost-effective COTS (commercial-off-the-shelf) hardware due to requirements for deterministic response times from the underlying software infrastructure, according to MontaVista.

“In an effort to keep up with the explosion of heterogeneous network traffic, network operators are looking to software defined networks architecture to enable greater utilization of standard hardware and dynamic provisioning of bandwidth,” says Patrick MacCartee, MontaVista’s director of product management.

By providing a popular Linux distribution compatible API along with a real-time KVM, RTCI “dramatically improves performance of Linux hypervisor capability for virtualized environments, while embracing the IT ecosystem of hardware, middleware, and bandwidth provisioning solutions,” MacCartee adds. “TEMs can [now] take advantage of leading IT provisioning and cloud management software combined with MontaVista’s high performance and custom tuning of an open source hypervisor.”
