Intel’s NUC Compute Element is an internal variant of discontinued Compute Card

Intel previewed a “NUC Compute Element” with Y- or U-series Core chips, RAM, and storage that can be embedded in laptops and other devices via a proprietary connector. It also showed off several new technologies including a Honeycomb Glacier laptop with a secondary screen on the keyboard.

Nvidia EGX edge-AI stack debuts on four new Jetson and Tesla-based Adlink systems

Nvidia’s “Nvidia EGX” solution for AI edge computing combines its Nvidia Edge Stack and Red Hat’s Kubernetes-based OpenShift platform running on Linux-driven Jetson modules and Tesla boards. Adlink unveiled four edge servers based on EGX using the Nano, TX2, Xavier, and Tesla.

Aaeon releases HW monitoring stack for Linux-on-Intel systems

Aaeon’s BIOS-driven “HERO SDK” hardware monitoring stack supports Linux-driven Aaeon systems that use Intel’s Gemini, Whiskey, and Coffee Lake CPUs. The company has also posted specs for a Coffee Lake based “COM-CFHB6” COM Express.

Toradex spins a distro for embedded Linux newbies

Purism’s Librem One and Mozilla’s WebThings focus on privacy for phones and home automation

Purism unveiled a “Librem One” service that brings privacy focused, encrypted chat, email, VPN, and social networking to Android and iOS phones. Meanwhile, Mozilla launched a privacy-focused WebThings Gateway 0.8 home automation stack for the Pi.

Eclipse IoT survey reveals growing role for Linux and Arm

ZigBee hub builds on Raspberry Pi

Dresden-Elektronik has launched two ZigBee home automation gateways: an RPi-based “Phoscon Gateway” and a “ConBee II” USB stick. The gateways run the company’s deCONZ Zigbee Gateway software paired with a new mobile app.

First open source MIPS code is released

Wave Computing has released its first open source MIPS ISA without license fees or royalties. The MIPS Open release includes the latest R6 version of the MIPS 32-and-64-bit ISA plus an IDE for embedded Linux and RTOSes and support for the free MIPSfpga core.

Linux continues advance in smart TV market

Linux dominates the smart TV market, which continues to grow despite concerns over privacy. A Strategy Analytics report pegs Samsung’s Tizen as the leading platform at 21 percent followed by LG’s WebOS at 12 percent.
