Andes’ RISC-V SoC debuts with AI-ready VPU as Microchip opens access to its PolarFire SoC

[Updated: Dec. 11] — Andes unveiled a Linux-ready, RISC-V-based “AndesCore 27-series” CPU core that features a VPU for AI applications. In other RISC-V on Linux news, Microchip opened early access to its FPGA-enabled PolarFire SoC and Hex Five announced MultiZone Security for Linux.

PinePhone goes on sale for $150 and Ubuntu Touch ports to the Pi

Pine64’s open source PinePhone has launched at $150 for a developer’s edition. The smartphone is supported by UBports’ Ubuntu Touch, which also now works on a Raspberry Pi 3 with touchscreen as well as an AOSP-based “Volla Phone,” now on Kickstarter.

Lenovo goes open source with RK3399 and AM5708 SBCs

Lenovo’s open-spec, $141 “Leez P710” SBC runs Ubuntu or Android 9.0 on an RK3399 with 4GB LPDDR4, 16GB eMMC, 40-pin GPIO, M.2, HDMI 2.0, and 4x USB ports. Up next is a Leez P515 board with a TI AM5708.

Yocto-based Torizon distro adds OTA updater

Toradex has released an experimental version of an OTA updater for its new Torizon embedded Linux distribution. Torizon OTA offers fault-tolerant features and supports web-based remote management including grouping of devices into fleets.

New HA clustering on MicroK8s eases path to clustered edge appliances

Canonical announced high availability clustering in MicroK8s, its single-node Kubernetes environment for prototyping k8s applications and running edge containers on IoT gateways. The feature is enabled using Dqlite.

Open source version of OPC UA spec for M2M launches

OSADL announced OPC Foundation certification of its open source, C-developed “open62541” v1.0 implementation of the TSN-enabled OPC UA standard for M2M Ethernet communications. Kalycito has launched an open62541 starter kit that runs on a Linux-ready TQ gateway.

Linux-powered NVR can stream and analyze 12 HD cam feeds without a cloud connection

[Updated: 3:45PM] — A new “Camect” camera hub and 1TB NVR that can aggregate up to 12 HD streams has funded on Indiegogo. The $279 device runs Linux on an Apollo Lake SoC and provides AI algorithms to analyze video without a cloud service.

Shipping schedule released for Linux-driven Librem 5 phone

Purism has revealed its shipping schedule for its privacy-oriented Librem 5 smartphone running PureOS. Comprised of six iterations, the shipping schedule spans from this month into Q4 2020. Meanwhile, the Dutch social enterprise Fairphone has launched its 3rd gen phone, the Fairphone 3 running Android 9.

The Linux Foundation’s AGL released UCB 8.0 with new improved profiles for telematics and instrument cluster and launched an Instrument Cluster Expert Group. The LF also gobbled up IBM’s OpenPower Foundation as IBM unveiled a royalty-free Power ISA.
