Apollo Lake module lets you choose between GbE and extra PCIe

May 4, 2018 — by Eric Brown — 230 views

Avalue’s Linux-ready “ESM-APLC” COM Express Compact Type 6 module features an Intel Apollo Lake SoC, triple display and 4K support, up to 64GB eMMC, 2x SATA, 3x or 4x PCIe, and wide-range power.

Avalue, which last fall produced a Linux-ready EQM-APL Qseven module based on Intel’s Apollo Lake, has now returned with a 95 x 95mm COM Express Compact Type 6 module that taps the same system-on-chip family. In this case, the Atom models are not invited, but you can choose a quad-core Pentium N4200 or a dual-core Celeron N3350, both of which have a low 6W TDP. The module supports Linux 4.5 or later, as well as Windows 10 Enterprise.

Other Apollo Lake based Compact Type 6 modules include Aaeon’s COM-APLC6, Advantech’s SOM-6869, Axiomtek’s CEM313, MSC’s MSC C6C-AL, and Ubiqconn’s COM-AL6C. Avalue’s new ESM-APLC was part of a dual product announcement that also included a Kaby Lake based ESM-KBLU Compact Type 6 module that is limited to Windows 10.

The ESM-APLC supports up to 8GB DDR3L-1866 via single socket. There are dual SATA III interfaces, and the module supplies up to 64GB of optional onboard eMMC 5.0. Triple display support is provided via dual-channel 18/24-bit LVDS and VGA, each with up to 1920 x 1200 @60Hz resolution, as well as HDMI (3840 x 2160 @30Hz) and DisplayPort (4096 x 2160 @60Hz). HD Audio is also available.

The ESM-APLC is further equipped with 4x USB 3.0, 8x USB 2.0, and single helpings of UART, SMBus, LPC, I2C, and 8-bit GPIO. Three PCIe Gen2 x1 interfaces are available, and if you’re willing to forego the GbE controller (Intel WGI211AT), you can order 4x PCIe x1 or 1x PCIe x4.

The module is rated for 0 to 60°C operation and offers a wide-range 9-19V AT/ATX input with ACPI 3.0. TPM 2.0 is optional.

Further information

The ESM-APLC is available now at an undisclosed price. More information may be found on Avalue’s ESM-APLC website.
